Areas of application
The SIMATIC Thin Client offers the possibility of running an operator station on a machine in the field very easily and inexpensively. Typical application examples include two operator stations in a complete or distributed machine connected to another SIMATIC PANEL or industrial control unit, as well as a remote operator terminal in client/server applications.
Advantages
Low total cost of ownership
Easy commissioning
Robust
Installation and design compatible with corresponding Multi Panels
Unlimited distance to the server
Design and functionality
SIMATIC Thin Clients are low-cost operator stations that can be used in SIMATIC PANELs or Panel Ps as well as in larger machines. As remote operator terminals, they can also be used directly in HMI connections and machine stations for SCADA, office or other functions. Their mounting aperture and design are compatible with SIMATIC Thin Client's Multi Panels of the corresponding size operated via a touch screen or an external keyboard or mouse connected to a USB interface.
SIMATIC Thin Client always communicates with the host computer (SIMATIC PANEL, PC or server) via the WinCC flexible option SmartAccess (panel copy on the client) or Microsoft's standard RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), so that the unit itself does not require installation, licenses or additional software.
The large distances to the host computer can be covered by low-cost Ethernet. SIMATIC Thin Client only requires an IP address. No local software installation or configuration is required. The host computer provides the display and user interface. Therefore, no backup, recovery or update measures need to be implemented for this client. The total cost of ownership is correspondingly low.
As a remote operator terminal without hard disk and fan, the device can be operated on machines with very high mechanical reliability requirements, such as vibration resistance. The 15-inch PRO model with protection class IP65 can also be mounted on support arms and pedestals.
HMI applications such as WinCC or WinCC flexible as well as office applications such as MS Excel or SAP can be operated directly via SIMATIC Thin Client via RDP connection at the machine site. Unlike Microsoft CE office Viewers, the data is writable. RDP is a standard protocol that is supported by all Windows operating systems.
SIMATIC Thin Client can be integrated into PROFINET/Ethernet networks. Alternatively, a point-to-point connection to the host computer is possible via an Ethernet cable. The spanning distance is up to 100 m (longer for switches). This is an advantage over conventional displays connected via USB/DVI.
Expandable communication possibilities starting with firmware version 1.4 (see link on the right). Support of Virtual Network Computing (VNC) for remote operation of PCs in cloning mode and connection to SINUMERIK PCUs/NCUs for operation of CNC controllers as end-applications with Citrix ICA Client access, e.g. for production data Thin Client can also be ordered as a starter package including device and WinCC flexible. SmartAccess license, thus providing a complete solution at a low price. In combination with the Multi Panels MP 277, you can purchase a discounted package and save approximately 25 percent compared to the price list for stand-alone devices.
